Islamic Awakening, Reaction to Colonialism

Navideshahed: The ongoing Islamic Awakening in the Middle East and North Africa is a reaction to centuries of colonial rule in Muslim countries, Secretary General of World Assembly of Islamic Awakening told a major international conference Sunday.

The current movement was a stage in a process by which Muslim people has got conscious in the field of politics, the Iranian official said in an inaugural speech to the International Conference on Islamic Awakening and Youth that started work in Tehran on Sunday.

Velayati cited struggle against the hegemony system, restoration of Palestinian rights and revival of Islamic identity as major demands of the Islamic movement in the regional countries involved.

"Muslim nation in their Islamic movement pursue freedom from poverty and other social and economic problems," he added.

Also aide to Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei, Velayati said the current developments in the world of Islam feature an anti-despotism dimension.

Velayati said the Islamic Awakening movement has historically started 150 years ago and has been undergoing a new, vital stage at present amid the current developments in the Arab countries.

The two-day international conference reviews the role and function of young Muslim activists in the process of the ongoing Islamic Awakening.

The conference aims to discuss the function and status of the youth in the wave of an Islamic Awakening which is sweeping through the Middle East and North Africa. It will also discuss how's to revive Islamic values and restore the national and Islamic dignity of Muslim countries as well as how's to create a new Islamic civilization on the basis of religion and rationality.
