The Letter that Failed Delivery

That night under the enemy heavy fire, the postman turned up. He handed a few letters and left; one of the letters was for Hodaei.

Iraqis had pushed us back from Mehran by a movable defense and they captured Mehran in April 1986 and they had planned to capture Khorramshahr as well. Indeed they wanted to exchange these two cities with Fav war zone.

Only a few of us were fighting against the enemy in order to protect Khorramshahr.

In fact we would open fire every night for the purpose of showing that our forces are present there. Mohammad Ali Hodayee Nik, the 19-year-old war veteran from Hamedan told me that he liked to be both a server for wireless system and a shooter of R.P.G gun. The distance of my rifle pit and his rifle pit was only 200 meters. On that night, a postman came there under the heavy attacks of enemy. He gave several letters to us and then he left. One of the letters belonged to Hodayee.

I called him, he was talking so loudly. He would say that he has shot with the R.P.G so much in a way that his ears were aching!

I told him, Ali, you have a letter. He told me, can you read the contents of the backside of the envelope?!

When I read the address, he said It was from! He was addressing his fiancée. After that he said that he will come to me after a few minutes.

After a few minutes, they brought Hodayee who had been put on a stretcher. He had lied down on the stretcher so peacefully.

I put the letter inside his packet. The letter returned to Hamedan along with the dead body!
