Muslims Prepare to Welcome Ramadhan

Navideshahed: Muslims in Iran and other countries are preparing to welcome Ramadhan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, when they fast from dawn to dusk.

Fasting is intended to teach Muslims about faith, spirituality, self-accountability and self-restraint.

Apart from strengthening the willpower and developing one's appreciation of values such as patience and humility, fasting improves eating habits.

Iranians welcome the holy month of Ramadhan with special ceremonies such as cleaning religious centers and mosques, since they are packed with fasting Muslims who try to spend their time praying and getting closer to God.

Muslims begin Ramadhan based on the physical sighting of the moon which is usually confirmed by religious authorities.

In some Muslim countries working hours are changed during Ramadhan so that fasting believers can get more time for attending religious ceremonies and practicing self-restraint.

Muslims believe Ramadhan to be an auspicious month for the revelations of God to humankind, being the month in which the first verses of the holy Qur'an were revealed to Prophet Muhammad.
