The current article begins with the question what ideas Muslim thinkers have about “Martyrdom”?.
In order to answer to the mentioned question, five contemporary Muslim thinkers have been selected. These thinkers presented their opinions about “Martyrdom”?. These thinkers and their works have been studied. They are namely Professor Motahhari, Dr Shariati, Dr Beheshti, Ayatollah Taleghani and Hojjat – ol – Eslam Hasheminejad.
In order to conduct this research, I have selected the method of documentary and library. Notes have been taken in order to analyze the views of these thinkers.
As for the results achieved in this article, I can refer to the followings:
All thinkers agreed on one point: Despite the respect they express to all the people who have been killed in the way of freedom, independence and prosperity of their society in other nations, but martyrdom – in the religious belief of Islam - ends to two factors. The first factor is dying while being aware of one’s action. And the second one is being killed in the way of God.
Some types of being killed – although they are respectable – are not considered as “Martyrdom”? from the point of view of Islam if they do not have the two mentioned characteristics.
The works remained from Professor Morteza Motahhari are rich sources for working out religious texts about “martyrdom”?. The books written by Professor Morteza Motahhari can be used as sources by researchers.
Dr Shariati was the first person who mentioned “Martyrdom”? as a culture. Hojjat – ol – Eslam Hashemi-nejad has described “Martyrdom”? as the birth of the person. According to him, “Martyr”? goes out of the ring of the family by this birth. Then “martyr”? belongs to the whole society. Dr Beheshti, Ayatollah Taleghani and other thinkers believe that Imam Hossein [The third imam of the Shiite people] is the outstanding example and criterion for true martyrdom in Islam. They believe that “Martyrdom”? causes durability for societies while at the same time; it is a shorter way for reaching to God and meeting with him.
