Sheikh Muhammad Khiabani turned to religious sciences early in his life and rapidly achieved scientific qualifications. The Constitutional Movement was a turning point in his life.
After the revolution, he was demanded to lead the Democrat Party of Azerbaijan and coincident with publication of Tajaddod (modernity) newspaper, he attempted other constructive works for the sake of his objectives and people’s welfare.
Subsequent to his and 5 of his comrades’ being elected as the representative of the National Consultative Assembly, the Qajar Prime Minister Vosough al-Dowleh decided to remove him from his way, so he dispatched a group of military officials accompanied by trained soldiers to Tabriz. Upon their entrance to the city, Khiabani uprised against the government and seized all government offices within less than 2 days. This victory and its subsequent Khiabani’s movement lasted for more than 5 months. The building of his newspaper became his headquarters, where he engaged in delivering his orations and people enthusiastically listened. These orations were in Azeri and their Persian translation was published in Tajaddod the following day.
Khiabani and his movement encountered different challenges during its 5-month life, but he overcame them all. Public enlightenment and promotion of people’s understanding of the issues underpinned his movement and for the very same reason he never sought to equip his forces to guard the movement.
During the World War I, he resisted against Russian pressures and at the same time hindered Communism infiltration. Eventually with his being crushed by Mokhber al-Saltaneh, the newly-appointed governor of Tabriz, he was apprehended and then martyred on 12 September 1920.
