Ali Ibn Musa AR-Reza Imam ALi ar-Reza was brought up under the holy guidance of his father for thirty-five years. His own insight and brilliance in religious matters combined with the excellent training and education given by his father made him unique in his spiritual leadership. Imam ar-Reza,was a living example of the piety of the great Prophet and the chivalry and generosity of Imam Ali ebn Abi Talib. Succession : Imam Musa al-Kazim was well aware of the aggressive designs of the government in power against the Imamat and therefore, during his lifetime he declared Imam ar-Reza as his successor in the presence of hundred and seventy-one prominent religious divines and called upon his sons and his family to submit to him and refer to him in all matters after him. He also left behind a written document declaring the succession of Imam ar-Reza duly signed and endorsed by not less than sixteen prominent persons. All these necessary steps were taken by the great Imam to avoid any confusion that may have arisen after his death. Imamat : Imam Musa al-Kazim was poisoned while he was still in prison and expired on 25th Rajab 183 AH, and on the same day Imam ar-Reza was declared as the Eighth Imam of the Muslim world. Imam ar-Reza had the great task before him of coming out with the correct interpretation of the Holy Quran; especially under the most unfavorable circumstances prevailing under the government of Haroon ar-Rashid. Many belonging to the faith were imprisoned and those who were free and could not be jailed faced untold atrocities and sufferings. Imam ar-Reza, of course, stamped his impression upon his age by carrying on the mission of the Great Prophet in a peaceful manner even during the most chaotic periods, and it was mostly due to his efforts that the teachings of the Holy Prophet and his descendants became widespread. Imam ar-Reza had inherited great qualities of head and heart from his ancestors. He was a versatile person and had full command over many languages. ebnu\'l-Athir al-Jazari penned very rightly that Imam ar-Reza was undoubtedly the greatest sage, saint and scholar of the second century (AH). Once, on his way to Khorasan, when he (the Imam) was brought by force by the guards of al-Mamoon from Medina, he arrived on horseback at Nayshaboor. Myriads of people gathered round him and all roads were over crowded as they had come to meet and see their great Imam. Abu Dhar\'ah ar-Razi and Mohammad ebn Aslam at-Tusi, the two great scholars of the day, stepped out of the crowd and begged the Imam to halt there for a moment so that the faithful may be able to hear his voice. They also requested the Imam to address the gathering. The Imam granted the request and in his brief address told the mammoth gathering the real interpretation of la Ilaha Illa Allah. Quoting Allah, he continued to say that the kalimah is the fortress of Allah and whoever entered the fortress saved himself from His wrath. He paused for a moment and continued that there were also a few conditions to entitle the entrance to the fortress and the greatest of all conditions was sincere and complete submission to the Imam of the day; and very boldly and frankly explained to the people that any disloyalty to the Prophet and his descendants would withdraw the right of the entrance to the fortress. The only way to earn Almighty Allah\'s pleasure was to obey the Prophet and his progeny and that was the only path to salvation and immortality. The above-mentioned incident speaks clearly of the great popularity of Imam ar-Reza, and the love, loyalty and respect the Muslims gave their beloved Imam. Al-Ma\'moon, the king, was conscious of the fact that he would not survive for long if he also did not express his loyalty to the great leader and his intelligence department had made it clear to him that the Iranian people were truly and sincerely loyal to the Imam and he could only win them over if he also pretended to give respect and sympathetic consideration to Imam Ali ar-Reza. Al-Mamoon was a very shrewd person. He made a plan to invite Imam ar-Reza and to offer him the heirship to the throne. The Imam was summoned by a royal decree and was compelled, under the circumstances, to leave Medina - where he was living a quiet life - and present himself at the royal court of al-Mamoon. On his arrival, al-Mamoon showed him hospitality and great respect, then he said to him:I want to get rid of myself of the caliphate and vest the office in you. But ar-Reza refused his offer. Then al-Ma\'moon repeated his offer in a letter saying: If you refuse what I have offered you, then you must accept being the heir after me. But again ar-Reza refused his offer vigorously. Al-Mamoon summoned him. He was alone with al-Fazl Ibn Sahl, the man with two offices (i.e. , military and civil). There was no one else in their gathering. Al-Mamoon said to ar-Reza, I thought it appropriate to invest authority over the Muslims in you and to relieve myself of the responsibility by giving it to you. When again ar-Reza refused to accept his offer, al-Mamoon spoke to him as if threatening him for his refusal. In his speech he said, \'Umar Ibn al-Khattab made a committee of consultation (shura) (to appoint a successor). Among them was your forefather, the Commander of the Faithful,\'Ali Ibn Abi Talib. (\'Umar) stipulated that any of them who opposed the decision should be executed. So there is no escape for you from accepting what I want from you. I will ignore your rejection of it. In reply, ar-Reza said: I will agree to what you want of me as far as succession is concerned on condition that I do not command, nor order, nor give legal decisions, nor judge, nor appoint, nor dismiss, nor change anything from how it is at present. Al-Mamoon accepted all of that. On the day when al-Mamoon ordered to make the pledge of allegiance to ar-Reza, one of the close associates of ar-Reza, who was present, narrates, On that day I was in front of him. He looked at me while I was feeling happy about what had happened. He signalled me to come closer. I went closer to him and he said so that no one else could hear, \' Do not occupy your heart with this matter and do not be happy about it. It is something which will not be achieved.\'Quoting al-Allamah ash-Shibli from his book al-Mamoon, we get a very clear picture of how al-Mamoon decided to offer his leadership to Imam ar-Reza. Imam ar-Reza was the Eighth Imam and al-Mamoon could not help holding him in great esteem because of the Imam\'s piety, wisdom, knowledge, modesty, decorum and personality. Therefore, he decided to nominate him as the rightful heir to the throne. Earlier in 200 AH he had summoned the \'Abbasids. Thirty-three thousand Abbasids responded to the invitation and were entertained as royal guests. During their stay at the capital he very closely observed and noted their capabilities and eventually arrived at the conclusion that not one of them deserved to succeed him. He therefore spoke to them all in an assembly in 201 AH telling them in categorical terms that none of the \'Abbasids deserved to succeed him. He demanded allegiance to Imam ar-Reza from the people in this very meeting and declared that royal robes would be green in future, the colour which had the unique distinction of being that of the Imam\'s dress. A Royal decree was published saying that Imam ar-Reza will succeed al-Mamoon. Even after the declaration of succession when there was every opportunity for the Imam to live a splendid worldly royal life, he did not pay any heed to material comforts and devoted himself completely to imparting the true Islamic conception of the Prophet\'s teachings and the Holy Quran. He spent most of his time praying to God and serving the people. Taking full advantage of the concessions given to him by virtue of his elevated position in the royal court, he organized the Majalis (meetings) commemorating the martyrdom of the martyrs of Karbala. These majalis were first held during the days of Imam Mohammad al-Baqir and lmdm Ja\'far as-Sadiq, but Imam ar-Reza gave the and Imam Ja\'far as-Sadiq, but Imam ar-Reza gave the majalis a new impetus by encouraging those poets who wrote effective poems depicting the moral aspects of the tragedy and the suffering of Imam Hossein and his companions. Al-Mamoon had been very scared of the growing popularity of the Imam and he had appointed him as his heir to the throne only for the fulfilment of his own most ambitious and sinister designs and getting the Imam\'s endorsement to his tricky plans. But the Imam naturally refused to give his endorsement to any such plans which were against the teaching of Islam. Al-Mamoon therefore became very disappointed with him and decided once and for all to check his growing popularity and ensuring his own survival by acting according to the old traditions of killing the Imam. Wanting to do it in a more subtle manner, he invited the Imam to dinner, and fed him poisoned grapes. The Imam died on 17th of Safar 203 AH, he was buried in Toos (Mashhad) and his Grand Shrine speaks well for the great personality the Imam possessed. Myriads of Muslims visit his Shrine every year to pay their homage to this Imam. Al-Imam ar-Reza, peace be on him, said: Doing seven things without doing the seven other things is self-mockery: asking for forgiveness from Allah verbally without repenting with the heart;asking for Allah\'s help without undertaking any effort; making a firm resolution to do something without taking due precautions; asking Allah for Paradise without enduring the related hardships; beseeching deliverance from the Hell-fire without refraining from lusts; remembering Allah without anticipating to encounter Him. I asked : \" How can one do so ? \" He replied : \" Learns our teachings and teaches it to the people . 57 - Whoever reckons himself wins and whoever is heedless from himself loses . Whoever fears ( his future ) attains security . Whoever takes lessons from this world\'s events gains insight . Whoever gains insight understands matters ; and whoever understands matters is a knowledgable person . 58 - Self-conceit has degrees : One is that a slave\'s ( of God ) bad-deed appear to him as beautiful , consider it as good and think has done a good-deed ; another is that a slave believe in God then lay God under obligation for that , while God did favour to him ( by guiding him ) . 59 - If Paradise and Hell were not there , people had to obey God and not disobey Him for His favour and benevolence . 60 - The Exalted Glorious God has connected three to three , that are not accepted without each other ; has mentioned praying with alms-giving , so whoever prays but not give alms his prayer is not accepted . Also has mentioned thanking him and thanking the parents together , so if someone was not grateful to his parents is not grateful to God . Also in the Holy koran enjoyment of ( having ) piety and recommendation of observing relation bonds are mentioned together . Therefore , if someone did not have benevolence to his relatives , is not considered a pious person . 61 - Refrain from greed and envy that these two destroyed the past nations ; do not be stingy because no free man or believer was afflicted with the blight of stinginess . Hadith 1 - A believer is not a real believer unless he has three traits : A practice from his God , a practice from his prophet and a practice from his Imam ; the practice from his God , is keeping his secrets ; the practice from his prophet , is compromise and kind treatment with people and the practice from his Imam , is forbearance in distress and affliction . 2 - ( Reward ) of the concealer of a good-deed equals seventy good acts , the discloser of bad-deeds is down-casted , and the consealer of bad-deeds is forgiven . 3 - Cleanliness is of the prophets\' morals. 4 - The honest was not ( and is not ) treacherous to you , however , [ you ] trusted the treacherous . 5 - The eldest brother is as the father . 6 - The friend of each person is his intellect and his enemy is his ignorance . 7 - Friendship to people is half of reasoning. 8 - Verily , God dislikes idle talk , wasting wealth and increased asking . 9 - A Muslim\'s person\'s reasoning ( mind ) is not perfect unless have ten traits : good is expected from him , others are secured from his evil , sees the little good from others as great , considers his great goodness as little , is not annoyed by asking needs from him , is not tired from seeking knowledge , poverty in the way of God is more beloved to him than wealth , humiliation in the way of God is more beloved to him than dignity with the enemy , anonymity is more desirable to him than fame ; then added the tenth and what is the tenth ! He was asked: what is it? He (P) replied : He does not see anybody unless say : He is better and more pious than me . 10 - Imam Reza ( P ) was asked : who are the low ? He replid : the one who has something to keep him away from ( remembering ) God . 11 - Faith is one grade higher than Islam , piety is one grade higher than faith , and the children of Adam were not given (any thing) superior to certitude . 12 - Feeding ( inviting for food ) when getting married is of the ( prophet\'s ) tradition . 13 - Observe relatives\' bonds even with a drink of water , and best is to refrain from harming them . 14 - Imam Reza ( P ) said to his companions : have the prophet\'s weapons ; he was asked : and what is the prophet\'s weapons ? He answered : supplication . 15 - Of the signs of knowledge of Islam are : meekness and knowledge ; and silence is a door of the doors of wisdom . Silence causes love and is a guide to all goodnesses . 16 - A time will come to the people were soundness is ten parts , nine is in isolation from the people and one part is in silence . 17 - Imam Reza ( p ) was asked about the reality of reliance ( upon God ) ; he replied : That is to fear no one other than God \" . 18 - Verily the worst of the people is the one who prevents his aid ( from the people ) , eats alone and beats his subordinates . 19 - There is no peace for the stingy , no joy for the envious , no loyality for the ruler and no magnanimity for the liar . 20 - No one is to kiss the hand of another person, because kissing one\'s hand is as praying for him . 21 - Have good opinion in God , because whoever has good opinion , God will give him good ; whoever is satisfied with little provision , God is pleased with his little deed ; and whoever is satisfied with the little allowed sustenance , his burden is light , his family are at ease , God makes him clear-sighted towards the ailments and remedies of this world , and takes him safely from this world to the inn of soundness and peace in paradise . 22 - Faith has four pillars , reliance upon God , satisfaction with God\'s decree , submission to divine commandment , and entrusting the affairs to God . 23 - Imam Raza ( p ) was asked concerning the best slaves ( of God ) . He replied : spaciousness of the house and abundance of friends ( lovers ) . 26 - When governers lie , rain is prevented ( from falling ) , when rulers oppress their governments are weakened , and when alms are not given cattles ( beasts of burden ) die . 27 - Whoever resolves a believer\'s problem , God removes sorrow from his heart on the Day of Judgement . 28 - Nothing is better than pleasing a believer after performing the duties , for the Exalted Glorious God . 29 - Have moderation in poverty and wealth , benevolence either little or great , because the Almighty Allah on the Day of Resurrection makes half of a date so big as the mountain of Ohod . 30 - Visit each other to have a love for each other , shake hands warmly and do not get angry at each other . 31 - Have secrecy ( in your works ) in the affairs of this world and religion . It is narrated that : \" Divulging is infidelity \" and was narrated that \" The divulger and the murderer are partners \" and was narrated that \" Do not make your friend aware of what you conceal from your enemy . 32 - A human can not get released from the difficulties by promise breaching , and the oppressor can not get released from the clows of punishment by deceit . 33 - Be aware in accompanying rulers , humble with friends , cautious with enemies and smiling with people . 34 - Whoever is satisfied with a little provision and sustenance , God will be pleased ( satisfied ) with his little deed . 35 - Intellect , is a bestowment from God , and having politeness is bearing an effort ; so whoever makes effort to have politeness will be able to do so , but , whoever makes effort to have intellect will only increase his ignorance . 36 - Verily , the one who is after increasing his provision and sustenance to manage his family , has reward more than the struggler in the way of God . 37 - There are five things that if somebody does not have there will not be any hope in him for anything of this world and the Hereafter : whoever you do not see trust in his character , generosity in his nature , persistance in his morals , nobility in his self and fear of his God . 38 - Never two groups confronted each other unless victory is for the group with greater pardon . 39 - Do not leave good-deeds and striving hard in worship depending upon love of Muhammad\'s descendants ( P ) , and do not leave love of Muhammad\'s descendants ( P ) and submission to their commandments depending upon worship because no one of the two is accepted without the other . 40 - Worship is not increased fasting and praying , in fact worship is increased contemplation in God\'s decree . 41 - The owner of blessings ( wealthy ) should make ease in his family\'s life ( expenditure ) . 42 - Whatever is an excess needs excessive speech too . 43 - Your aid to the unable is better than alms-giving . 44 - Imam ( P ) was asked : \" How did you start your day ? \" He answered : \" With a decreased life , a recorded work , death is attached to us ( our necks ), fire is following us and we do not know what will be done to us . 45 - The generous eats from others\' food so that they eat from his food , and the stingy does not eat from people\'s food so that they do not eat from his food . 46 - We are a household that see our promise a debt upon us as did God\'s Messenger ( P ) . 47 - No slave ( of God ) reaches the reality of faith\'s perfection till he has three characteristics : obtain deep understanding in religion, observe moderation in living and patience in afflictions . 48 - The Imam ( P ) told Abi Hashem Dawood bin Al-Kasem Al-Jaffari : \" O Dawood because of God\'s Messenger ( P ) we have a right upon you , and you have a right upon us . He ( P ) replied : It is the intellect by which can identify the truthful to God , accept from him , and identify the liar to God and refuse from him ; Ibn sekeet said : Swearing to God this is the answer . 51 - Whoever likens God to His creatures, he is a polytheist , and whoever attributes to God what He prohibited is a non-believer . 52 - Faith is performing obligations and refraining from the prohibited ; and faith is belief in heart , confession by tongue and action by members . 53 - Al-rayan asked the Imam ( P ) : \" What is your opinion regarding the koran ? \" Imam replied : \" Koran is the speech of God , seek guidance only from koran and not other than it , otherwise , you will get deviated \" . 54 - Imam Reza ( P ) while glorifying the koran said : \" Koran is a firm cable and the best way to Paradise . Koran is the human\'s rescue from Hell-fire . Koran does not get old and out-of-date with time and is an ever new speech because it was not set for a certain time . Koran is the guide for all humans and is the ( conclusive ) argument over the people . \" Falsehood shall not come to it from before it nor from behind it ; a ravelation from the Wise , the Praised One \" . 55 - Solaiman Ibn Jaffar Al-Jaffari asked the Imam ( P ) : \" What is your opinion regarding working for the regime \" The Imam replied : \" O\' Solaiman , any kind of cooperation with the ( opperssor and userper ) government is as disbelief in God ; looking at such governers is a great sin and makes one deserve Hell . 56 - Abdul-salam Ibn Saleh Harawi said I heard Imam Reza ( P ) saying : \" God\'s mercy be upon the one who enlivens our aim \" .
