Events of 3 February 1979

In a press interview in Refah School Imam Khomeini announced, “An interim government will be appointed which is charged to prepare the grounds for holding of referendum. Moreover, when the Constitution is drafted a referendum will be held on it.”? He also called Bakhtiar administration illegal and said, “Do not do something that I invite people to jihad.”?
** Subsequent to session of the Council on Islamic Revolution with the presence of Imam Khomeini, Engineer Mehdi Bazargan was appointed the Prime Minister of the Interim Government.
** Engineer Bazargan said with regard to his being appointed Prime Minister, “Following the session of the Council on Islamic Revolution on 3 February 1979, Mr. (Imam) Khomeini addressed us and asked ‘Whom should we appoint as Prime Minister?’… Mr. Motahari or another clergy of the council proposed me. Anyway, the members agreed on me and even if one disagreed he did not express. Ayatollah Khomeini smiled, expressed his pleasure and said he felt assured from two sides. Seemingly he meant nationalists and clergies by two sides. Note: for long after Bazargan resignation Imam Khomeini repeatedly said in his lectures, “Appointment of Bazargan was a mistake and I was not satisfied with it at heart.”?
** The enthusiasts to visit Imam Khomeini gathered in front of his residence. United Press estimated them to be more than 4.5 million people.
** Agence France-Presse: Bakhtiar said in an interview with Le Matin, “Sometimes patience is the best tactic and if Ayatollah Khomeini wants to create his favored government in holy city of Qom I would let him to establish a state like Vatican.
** A decree on release of 350 prisoners of military courts was issued.
** Popular demonstrations in some cities were held without any contact with regime officers.
** Iranian university students attacked Iranian embassies in the US, Lebanon and Australia to express their disgust towards Pahlavi Regime.
** 40 other members of Majlis resigned.
** Alwatan Alarabi Newspaper: An Army General visited the Shah abroad.
** A message of happiness and congratulation was sent from Yasser Arafat to Imam Khomeini.
Associated Press reported: The reactions of Islamic countries towards Ayatollah Khomeini’s return have been various. Sadat in Egypt said that he would allow no Ayatollah in Egypt. Saudi press has kept silence and Baghdad regime has not yet taken any stance. Only Gaddafi said that he would spare no help upon the request.
