Iranian FM Meets Myanmarese Counterpart over Muslims' Grave Conditions

Navideshahed: Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi met with his Myanmarese counterpart Wunna Maung Lwin to discuss the grave conditions of the Muslim minority in the South Asian country.

In a meeting held on the sidelines of a Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in the Iranian capital, Salehi said Iran is ready to use its influence and power for the cessation of hostilities in Myanmar, and voiced Tehran's readiness to dispatch humanitarian aid to the South Asian nation.

He cautioned that "the recent conflicts and the pain and agonies of the Myanmarese Muslims saddened the public opinion in the Muslim world profoundly".

Maung Lwin, for his part, said his country is committed to respecting the rights of all ethnicities and tribes and does not discriminate against Muslims.

The two foreign ministers also discussed bilateral issues and cooperation between Iran and Myanmar.

Since June, hundreds of members of the nearly-one-million-strong Rohingya Muslim minority have been killed and tens of thousands of others among them have been displaced in the west of the country due to a wave of communal violence.
