Cleric Dismisses Western Sanctions against Iran as Ineffective

Navideshahed: Tehran's Friday Prayers Imam, Hujjat al-Islam Kazzem Sediqi played down effectiveness of the economic sanctions imposed by the West against Iran, saying that such pressures are nothing new to the Iranian nation.

Addressing a large congregation of worshippers on Tehran University Campus on Friday, Sediqi pointed to the economic sanctions and restriction on Iran during the eight-year Iraqi imposed war on Iran in the 1980s, and stated, "Sanctions are not effective and the eight years of the Sacred Defense was an instance of the same fact, when our nation faced the toughest pressures and sanctions."

Meantime, the senior cleric said that the Iranian nation is well aware of its holy causes and goals and will not give up its rights.

Despite the rules enshrined in the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) entitling every member state, including Iran, to the right of uranium enrichment, Tehran is now under four rounds of UN Security Council sanctions for turning down West's calls to give up its right of uranium enrichment.

Tehran has dismissed the West's demand as politically tainted and illogical, stressing that sanctions and pressures merely consolidate Iranians' national resolve to continue the path.

Political observers believe that the United States has remained at loggerheads with Iran mainly over the independent and home-grown nature of Tehran's nuclear technology, which gives the Islamic Republic the potential to turn into a world power and a role model for the other third-world countries. Washington has laid much pressure on Iran to make it give up the most sensitive and advanced part of the technology, which is uranium enrichment, a process used for producing nuclear fuel for power plants.

Meantime, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei stressed the importance of economy of resistance for Iran to counter the western states' sanctions against the country, and said the Iranian nation will pave way for its prosperity and progress by implementing the economy of resistance.

Ayatollah Khamenei considered the "economy of resistance", which has been recently proposed by him to counter the western imposed sanctions and pressure, different with the aggressive economy, which was proposed by a student, suggesting that a precise analysis on it would be presented, which might be used as a complement for the resistance economy.

He reiterated that the economy of resistance is not a defensive and segregation economy, but an economy for a nation that wants to pass through tough times and sanctions, and simultaneously pave its path for national blossoming and prosperity.
