Beirut Friday Prayers Imam:

Fasting, the Path to True Freedom

Navideshahed: His Eminence, Sayyed Ali Fadlullah, delivered the two Friday prayer sermons at the Imamain Al-Hassanain Mosque, Ramadan1rd 1433H. - July, 20th 2012. Several prominent religious scholars, dignitaries and thousands of believers attended the Jumu’a prayer.

The First Sermon

Sayyed Ali Fadlullah, welcomed, in the first sermon, the advent of the blessed month of Ramadan. He explained that, in addition to the blessings and graces Allah bestows upon us in this month, fasting, just as any act of worship, plays a role in building man and securing the welfare of the society. If we do not realize the meanings of fasting, we will only be left with the burden of hunger and thirst.

The meanings and goals of fasting are numerous and they include liberating man. Fasting is also a training school on patience and making the one who fasts feel the hunger of the poor to have mercy on them.

Moreover, the month of Ramadan, contrary to what people may think, is the month of activity and vitality both at daytime and at night.

Fasting is also a means for reproducing the believer’s personality with regard to better knowing Allah, taking the Hereafter into account, as well as building the personality of the believer at the level of morals and behavior. It is also a guide to the right.

The Messenger of Allah (p.) once heard a woman cursing a female servant of hers as she was fasting. So, the Messenger of Allah (p.) asked for some food for her and told her: “Eat.”? So, she said: “I am fasting, O Messenger of Allah (p.).”? Thus, he said: “How can you be fasting and you have cursed your servant. Fasting is not just to stop eating and drinking. Allah has made it a veil of prevention from doing great sins by actions and words. How few are the fasters and how many are the hungry!”?

The Sayyed ended by calling on the believers to benefit from the graces of this month, the month of Allah\\\'s forgiveness and mercy and the month in which the believers should rebuild their personality on the basis of good and righteousness to ensure that they only do what pleases Allah.

The Second Sermon

Sayyed Ali Fadlullah began the second sermon by talking about the difficulties the nation is facing with the beginning of the month of Ramadan. In addition to the arrogant schemes, the nation is plagued with the internal differences of all kinds, making it extremely vulnerable to any external threat.

In Syria, where the blood-shedding continues, including the recent explosions that killed some of the leaders of the army that was being prepared to stand in the face of the Zionist Entity, while all the windows of dialogue are closed, we call on all parties to think about the outcomes of all this continuing violence that will destroy the country and lead to the outbreak of a civil war that will put the lid on any chance for reform which is the right of the people, as well as to the loss of one of the positions of strength and opposition in the Arab and Muslim world. The Sayyed reminded the Syrians that violence will only produce more violence, and he called on them to seek internal peace and unity that is based on freedom, justice and reform.

The Sayyed also shed light on the massacres in Myanmar and the continuing aggressions in Palestine, reminding the Muslims that whoever does not respond to the call of fellow Muslims for help is not a true Muslim.

As for Lebanon, the Sayyed said that he had hoped that the Lebanese would have received this month while enjoying social security and political stability to feel the spiritual joy of this month. Nevertheless, they are suffering on all these levels, while the government is but marking time, as its ministers try to gain more popularity among their respective sects in anticipation of the coming elections, even if it were at the expense of the country.
