Millions of Shiites Mark Arbaein around World

Navideshahed: Shiites around the world are holding mourning rituals on Arbaein, which marks the 40th day after martyrdom anniversary of third Shia Imam.

Acorss Iran, millions of black-clad citizens took to the streets and local mosques and other religious and community centers to participate in a variety of mourning processions, where elegies were recited in the memory of Imam Hussein (PBUH) and his 72 loyal followers, who were martyred by forces of the despotic second Umayyad caliph Yazid ibn Muawiyah in 680 CE at a place still remembered and referred to as Karbala in today's Iraq.

Meanwhile, millions of pilgrims have thronged Iraq's holy city of Karbala to commemorate Arbaein.

Tight security measures have been put in place with a large number of security forces deployed in Iraq's holy sites in preparation for the occasion.

The Iraqi defense and interior ministries have deployed 35,000 security forces to secure the roads for the pilgrims.

Over the past days, large crowds of Shia mourners from various countries have arrived in Karbala.

In recent weeks, scores of people have been killed in bomb attacks targeting Shia Muslims.

The deadliest attack took place on January 5, in which more than 70 people lost their lives in blasts in Baghdad and southern Iraq.
