Maulana Abbas:

US no Friend of Kashmiris

Navideshahed: A veteran Kashmiri leader has urged pro-independence leadership not to expect any favour from US or other western powers as their policies are guided by their interests.

Addressing a seminar here, Maulana Abbas Ansari, said that the US would not do justice to the Kashmir movement as, according to him, America had its own interests to bear in mind and could not afford to ignore them.

Kashmiris have to rely solely on themselves and work collectively and jointly to resolve the Kashmir issue, he said.

“Conspiracies are being hatched to sabotage the Kashmir movement. Sectarian divides are being created among Kashmiris. We have to be vigilant and defeat such forces,”? Ansari, who formerly led the multi-party Hurriyat Conference said.

Speaking on the occasion, JKLF chief, Muhammad Yasin Malik, announced to launch a state-wide signature campaign for the release of expatriate Kashmiri leader Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai who faces charges in US for working at the behest of a foreign government.

Fai was arrested by US FBI on July 19 last year for allegedly collaborating with the Pakistani spy agency ISI by funneling thousands of dollars to change the American lawmakers' views on Kashmir.

Fai has since been released on parole. Later Fai's home confinement and electronic monitoring was also removed by a judge on December 27.

Sareer A Khalid, a KAC leader, in a telephon address to the seminar however clarified that Dr. Fai never pleaded guilty to being a spy of and for the ISI. Dr. Fai pleaded guilty to participating in a conspiracy to prevent the US government from collecting full tax revenue. There was never any espionage or spying related charge directed at Dr. Fai, he claimed.

He also said that the US government has voluntarily withdrawn the charge.

Asking the United States to take a lenient view in the case of Dr. Fai, Malik said, “I don’t want to question or confront US judicial system but I would make an appeal to them to take lenient view in Fai’s case as he was a peacemaker. It will be their biggest support to the moderate constituency which wants peaceful resolution of Kashmir, without bloodbath and hatred.

Terming Fai as an ambassador of Kashmir, Malik said he always stood for peaceful resolution of Kashmir.

Meanwhile, National Front leader Nayeem Khan, High Court Bar Association chief Mian Qayoom and several other separatist leaders spoke at the seminar.

The event had been organised on the role of the Prof Abdul Ahad Wani, a prominent ideologue of pro-independence movement, murdered by gunmen in early nineties.

“Dr. Wani was among the front ranks when the militant front opened in Kashmir. He chose to fight the diplomatic battle. And eventually laid down his life for the Kashmir cause,”? Malik said.

A resolution asking US to administer justice in the case of Dr. Fai was also issued.
