US still seeking regime change in Syria: Analyst

Navideshahed- The United States has not changed its policy on Syria and it is still seeking a regime change in the Arab country, a geopolitical analyst in New York says.

“The US policy in Syria has not substantively changed rather there has been minor cosmetic changes throughout the course of the so-called peace process, and the slight change in the rhetoric you hear from [US Secretary of State John] Kerry and other officials from Washington,”? Eric Draitser, the founder of StopImperialism.com, said on Sunday during a telephone interview with Press TV.
“Earlier in the conflict, it was much more focused on the regime change, an outright regime change, by using the foreign-backed militants on the ground. This is still ultimately the policy,”? he added.
“However, the United States is employing the tactics, what is called crisis management, and that is the United States creates a crisis, foments that crisis, cease the fire, so to speak, and then uses its diplomatic and political muscles to influence the outcome of that crisis, and this is precisely what we are seeing in Syria,”? Draitser stated.
On Thursday, Russia accused the US of observing a political approach towards Syria that encourages “extremists”?.
US policy “encourages extremists who are financing terrorism and supplying terrorist organizations and groups with weapons,”? Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at a joint news conference with his Iraqi counterpart Hoshyar Zebari.
“In the end, this will not result in anything except the escalation of the Syrian conflict,”? he said.
The Russian foreign minister made the comments after Kerry criticized Moscow for what he called Russia not doing enough to make sure the Syrian government remained committed to the Geneva II talks.
On February 15, the second round of negotiations between the Syrian government and the foreign-backed opposition ended without finding a way to resolve the conflict, which has dragged on for nearly three years.
On February 16, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem blamed Washington for the failure of the talks in Geneva, saying the US tried to “create a very negative climate for dialogue in Geneva.”?
