Al-Qaeda aims to ignite sectarian conflict in Lebanon

Navideshahed- A Lebanese newspaper says an arrested figure of the al-Qaeda-linked Abdullah Azzam Brigades has confessed that the extremist group aims to ignite sectarian conflict in Lebanon.

Naim Abbas said Takfiris carried out bombing attacks with the aim of provoking the Shia resistance movement Hezbollah and enraging the Sunni community to react.
Abbas also stated that such a scenario would push Sunni religious figures and politicians to rise against Hezbollah.
He added that after the first bombings failed to provoke a hasty reaction from Hezbollah, the group decided to expand the area of suicide attacks after discussing the matter with the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant terrorist group.
Abbas, who was arrested earlier this month, is a commander of Abdullah Azzam Brigades.
Last week, Lebanese security forces also detained Hassan Abu Afleh, a leading figure in Abdullah Azzam Brigades, which has targeted Iranian interests in Beirut over the past months.
Abu Afleh is suspected of recruiting bombers and assembling car bombs for the terrorist group.
The terrorist group claimed responsibility for the car bomb attack on February 19 that hit near Iran’s cultural center in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, killing five people.
The al-Qaeda-linked group had earlier targeted the Iranian Embassy in Beirut on November 19, 2013. The attack killed over two dozen people, including Iran’s cultural attaché, and left at least 150 others injured.
The terrorist group’s leader Majed al-Majed was arrested in early January but died days later from poor health in a Lebanese military hospital.
