The speech of Dr. Mohammad Reza Soroush, the manager of “the Society for Chemical Weapons Victims Support”? in a meeting reviewing “Chemical Attacks of Iraq to Iran; West Attitude”? held on 23 September, 2013 by “Iranian History”? website in the conference hall of “Ettelaat”? newspaper:
I work in a research center focusing on war health complications. I also manage the Society for Chemical Weapons Victims Support.
In the imposed war of Iraq against Iran, the weapons of mass destruction were utilized and caused many civilians be killed and hurt. The same happened in Japan but they could build a new way of dialogue out of it in the global level and make Hiroshima as a peace axis. We not only did not use this capacity as an opportunity but also forgot the matter and lost opportunities.
In the imposed war, 560 chemical attacks took place in Iran which 35 of them were against civilian targets. Some of these attacks happened for the first time in the world after World War I. In fact, after World War I, in spite of the Convention, chemical weapons were used against Iran. Nerve gas was utilized against Iran for the first time in history. Nerve gas had never been used against military and civilian targets but was utilized in the imposed war against Iran. Moreover, mustard gas was utilized against civilian targets in Sardasht, Marivan and other towns of Iran which again was for the first time. Regardless to this cruelty, no international measures or condemnations were taken.
It is said that about a million people in Iran were affected by chemical gas and 100 thousand of them suffer from the complications now. Among them, 75 thousand veterans are under the support of Foundation of Martyrs and Veterans.
According to a report released at the time Hans Blix was the chairman, Iraq utilized 19500 chemical bombs, 54000 chemical bullets, and 27000 chemical short range missiles against Iran during the years of 1983-1988. They also confirmed that about 1800 tons of Mustard gas, 140 tons of nerve gas, and 600 tons of other chemical gas were utilized against Iran. Iranians claim that it was more than this and medical evidences as well as victims’ complications prove this claim.
