President Urged to Condemn Desecration of Sanctities at UNGA

Navideshahed: The president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, as head of the Non-aligned Movement, can condemn the desecration of religious sanctities and call for an end to it while addressing the United Nations’ General Assembly.

This is according to Hojat-ol-Islam Hossein Ebrahimi, former lawmaker and current member of the Combatant Clergy Association, who also told IQNA that the president should also elaborate on the contradictions between Western countries’ claims about advocating human rights and their conduct in the world.

President Ahmadinejad will leave for New York on Saturday to attend the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Hojat-ol-Islam Ebrahimi said the presidency of Iran over the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) has given it more leverage to point out international issues at the General Assembly.

He said one of the problems that should be addressed is the structure of the United Nations and the Security Council, which are dominated by a few Western countries, whereas NAM with so many member states has no representative at the UNSC.

“This is an unfair and unjust structure. So the need for structural changes at the UN should be emphasized (at the UNGA)”?.

The cleric pointed to the situation in Syria, Iran’s peaceful nuclear program, and the unjust sanctions against the Islamic Republic as some other topics that should be included in the president’s address.

He reiterated that the Islamic Republic of Iran, as the flag-bearer of Islamic Awakening should draw attention to the need for putting an end to desecration of religious sanctities and push for a resolution or statement against blasphemy.
