Iran Could be the Standard-Bearer of Change in NAM

Navideshahed: The 16th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement, which is currently underway in Tehran, is a major breakthrough for Iran’s foreign policy, according to political analysts.

The fact that Iran is hosting such a prestigious meeting has proven that the efforts of Western countries, and especially the United States, to isolate Iran are futile. In other words, the NAM summit in Tehran shows that Iran is still at the heart of international diplomacy.

The ongoing political crisis in Syria and Iran’s potential role in resolving the crisis have doubled the significance of the summit. The political delegations participating in the summit will eagerly use the opportunity to attempt to find a lasting solution for Syria.

The 16th edition of the conference can also serve as a platform for the Iranian government to assume the spiritual leadership of the Non-Aligned Movement at this historic juncture. The organization was established during the Cold War era in the 1960s, when many nations became frustrated with the Western and the Eastern blocs. However, the current global political situation necessitates a redefinition of the ideas and meanings of the non-alignment concept. This provides a very good opportunity for Iran, as one of the leading countries defying the major powers and their policies, to assume a leadership role in the change process in NAM.

The political earthquakes in the Arab world and in South America have paved the way for such a mission. By organizing a leadership committee comprising influential countries, NAM could gradually become more independent in the international arena and start to counter political pressure, which is quite prevalent across the world.

New economic and transportation mechanisms, in a form accepted by the member states of the movement, could also help Iran and many other countries in their struggles against Western embargoes. And NAM’s longstanding support for Iran’s nuclear rights over the years has paved the way for such broad cooperation in all spheres.
