Supreme Leader:

NAM Capable of Neutralizing Sanctions against Independent States

TEHRAN (FNA)- Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei in a meeting with President of Guinea Bissau Sheriff Namajo stressed that the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) can defuse the western sanctions against the members of the bloc.

"If the NAM members regulate vast cooperation within the framework of the Movement, the bullying powers' attempts to boycott and pressure the independent countries will be foiled," Ayatollah Khamenei said during the meeting in Tehran on Saturday.
"The hegemonic powers try to induce that any resistance against them is impossible, but the NAM members can prove that this is wrong," he added.

The meeting was held after the 16th NAM summit in the Iranian capital, Tehran, held from August 26 to 31. At the Tehran summit, Iran received the presidency of the grouping.

NAM, which is comprised of some 120 member and 17 observer states, is an international organization of states considering themselves not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. NAM is the largest grouping of countries outside of the United Nations.

During the 6 days of holding the conference, the Iranian officials held meetings with the heads of states and important leaders of different countries attending the conference on different regional and international issues as well as the bilateral relations.

NAM member states represent nearly two-thirds of the United Nations' members and comprise 55% of the world population, particularly countries considered to be developing or part of the Third World.
