UN Calls for Formation of Myanmar Truth Commission

Navideshahed: A United Nations human rights envoy has called for a "truth commission" to be formed to probe into human rights abuses in Myanmar’s Rakhine state against Rohingya Muslims.

Ending a weeklong visit to Myanmar on Saturday, Tomas Ojea Quintana, the UN special human rights rapporteur said he had witnessed ‘‘widespread suffering’’ in the western state.

According to AFP, Quintana said he has recorded allegations of serious violations by authorities including killings, torture, arbitrary arrest and excessive use of force.

Quintana said "I am concerned ... at the allegations I have received of serious human rights violations committed as part of measures to restore law and order."

He also urged the government to investigate the violence in June between ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and stateless Muslim Rohingya.

The Myanmar government refuses to recognize nearly-one-million-strong Rohingya Muslims community, which the UN calls one of the world’s most prosecuted people.
