Yahya Abd-al-Latif Ayyash (February 22nd 1966 – 5 January 1996) was the chief explosives handler of Hamas and the leader of the West Bank battalion of the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades. In that capacity, he earned the nickname the Engineer.
Yahya, the elder son of Abdolafit Ayyash and Ayesheh Ayyash was born in Rafat village near Toolkaram city. From early childhood, Yahya was very talented in the repair and assemble of electronic devices. The members of his family used to give their old and out of date radio and TV sets, which they had no hoe of repair, to make them work like when they were brand new.
After finishing his high school, Yahya entered the Birzeit University and became a member of the Islamic Youth Society in the campus. Three years later like the majority of young Palestinians he joined the intifada or the Palestinian uprising at a time that no one in the Zionist regime knew him and no one believed that the shy and humble youth would emerge as their biggest enemy.
A master of disguise, Ayyash was the most wanted man in Israel for three years, and the target of a massive manhunt. Ayyash was assassinated by Israel's Shin Bet in 1996. Shin Bet tricked a trusted friend of Ayyash's into giving him a bomb-laden cell phone. When Ayyash used it, Shin Bet detonated it, killing him instantly
