One Killed as Egypt Clashes Rage on

Navideshahed: At least one person has been killed and several others injured in clashes that have broken out near the Egyptian Defense Ministry building in Cairo.

The clashes, which are said to be ongoing, erupted early Sunday between Egyptian security forces and protesters after hundreds from the latter group camped outside the Defense Ministry building on Friday night, demanding the dissolution of the presidential election committee.

The angry protesters first took to the streets on Friday in protest at the election committee’s decision to ban the two candidates of Egypt’s Islamic parties from running in the presidential race.

The demonstrators called for the reinstatement of the disqualified candidates and the overhaul of election law.

The protesters further condemned the Supreme Electoral Committee for allowing former Premier Ahmed Shafiq to enter the race along with 12 other hopefuls listed by the electoral commission.
