The body of Sheikh Betawi was wrapped with Hamas's banner then carried by Hamas supporters from Rafidya Hospital to the martyrs' houses for the funeral prayer before being taken to Betawi's native town Beta to the south of Nablus to be buried there.
During the funeral procession, in which hundreds of women also participated, mourners chanted slogans supporting Hamas and the political and national position of Sheikh Betawi, promising to continue on his path until defeating the occupation and liberating Al Aqsa Mosque. In addition, they confirmed that they will always maintain the Islamic and the national constants and follow the resistance and martyrs' path, recalling the martyr leaders such as Sheikh Jamal Mansour and Jamal Salim.
Before transferring Betawi's body to Nablus, crowds of people from occupied city of Jerusalem took part last night to perform the funeral prayers in Al Aqsa Mosque.
After a life full of struggle against occupation and missionary work, spells of detention in Israeli occupation jails as well as deportation, Betawi (68 years) died on Wednesday (4/4) as a result of health complications after an open-heart surgery in Makassed hospital and after being prevented by the occupation from traveling to receive treatment in Jordan.
Participants' Eulogies
After the funeral prayer, Sheikh Maher Kharraz "Abu Taher" a leader in Hamas Movement delivered a speech in which he paid tribute to Sheikh Betawi. “Today there is sadness here on earth for the departure Sheikh Hamed, but at the same time there is joy in heavens were martyrs are waiting to receive him,”? Kharraz said.
Hamed Bitawi's brother added that Sheikh Hamed has always wished to see Palestine free before he dies, yet his people will follow his path until achieving this goal.
