Kashmiri Scholar Dismisses Saudi Clerics’ Un-Islamic Fatwas as Unworthy

Maulana Dawoodi was referring to the recent edict given by the senior Saudi cleric, Abdulaziz Al al-Sheikh, wherein he had asked for banning the construction of new churches and destroying the existing ones.

In an exclusive interview with Taghrib News Agency (TNA), Moulana Dawoodi said that Muslims have already been lablelled as “terrorists”? and such edicts can make them, especially those living in non-Muslim countries, more vulnerable to extremist ideologies.

“Ulemas should issue Fatwas (edicts) in accoradance with Quran and Shariah. Fatwas must not be issued to please anyone,”? he said.

Stating that Islam is a religion of peace and wisdom, Maoulana Dawoodi said that Prophet Mohammad (SAWW), his family and companions expanded Islam through peaceful preaching.

“There is no scope for violence in Islam,”? he added.

Stating that anti-Islamic forces are hell bent on defaming the peaceful religion, Moulana Dawoodi said that there is a need to adopt a peaceful strategy and desist from issuing edicts that can prove counterproductive.

Stressing the need for Islamic unity, he urged the Muslims of the world to strive for unity.

“We should put our differences aside and stand united to fight our common enemy tooth and nail,”? he said.

Moulana Dawoodi, who has been one of the pioneers of Islamic unity in this disputed Himalayan region, asked the religious scholars to adopt a positive strategy and give more preference to common beliefs and avoid fuelling discord and dissention among Muslims.

“The matters of scholarly differences should strictly remain amongst the scholars,”? he said.

Moulana Dawoodi said that followers of Hanafi school of thought have always been in majority in Kashmir, but certain elements are now trying to hijack them.

“Unfortunately, religious leaders of a particular school of thought are being targetted as part of a concerted conspiracy in Kashmir,”? said Dawoodi, who himself was targeteted few years back in Kashmir’s Pulwama district. Several of his followers had died in the attack.
