“Evening of the 10th Day”? to premiere in Tehran on Sunday

TEHRAN (SCIB)- A number of movie theaters in Tehran will begin premiering on Sunday “Evening of the 10th Day”?, a drama about a woman who begins an odyssey in search of her sister lost during the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war.

The film was originally to be directed by Rasul Mollaqolipur in April 2007, but Mojtaba Raee was assigned to make the film after Mollaqolipur died of a heart attack in March 2007.

The story of this Iranian film takes place in Karbala, Iraq, in the month of Muharram, during which Shia Muslims commemorate the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions.

Karbala, Iraq is home to the shrines of Imam Hussein (AS) and his brother Hazrat Abbas (AS).

The film is about two sisters who live with their family in Khorramshahr, in southwestern Iran. The 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war forces the two sisters to separate. Maryam Shirazi, one of the sisters who lives in Iran, travels to Iraq to search for her sister after the fall of Saddam.

Shooting of the film was carried out in January 2009 in Muharram.

“We insisted that the major part of the filming should be done on Aashoura in the place between the shrines of Imam Hussein (AS) and Hazrat Abbas (AS). It was hard to shoot the scenes among the huge crowd gathered around the shrines to take part in the mourning ceremonies,”? producer Manuchehr Mohammadi told the Persian service of ISNA on Friday.

The mourning ceremonies performed by Shia Muslims reach their climax on Aashoura, the tenth day of Muharram upon which Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions were martyred.

“Working on this film project remains engraved in the memories of our group. Members of our group also took part in the mourning ceremonies during their own free time,”? Mohammadi stated.

“Evening of the 10th Day”? won the Audience Favorite Film award at the 28th Fajr International Film Festival in February 2010.
