Are You a Painter?

(By Pilot General Iraj Assareh)
On one of the hot and scorching days of summer, the supreme council of the Air Force commanders was supposed to be held in Kish.
General Sattary and I left for Kish two days in advance to prepare for the preliminary action and surveying the general condition of the base. On the first day of visit, General Sattary noticed the rusted fence around the base and immediately tole the respective commander who accompanied us, "This fence is rusted. Why haven't you applied gas-oil? If you had, it would not have rusted". He answered, "We do not have instructions regarding applying gas-oil to the rails in our manuals. General asked what they had done about painting.
The commander to make an excuse, said, "They had no paint." The General, irritated, asked, "You mean there are no paint tins available here?" The commander replied that there were a few tins available and then ordered his men to fetch them.
General Sattary ordered, "You paint this part, I will go inside the base and return after a while to see what you have done".
After about an hour we returned to the place.
We noticed that a painter and two soldiers were painting and had painted less than four meters of the railings. The General got furious and shouted,
"Get me a soldier's uniform". Since I was not aware of the General's intention, I thought he wanted to make the commander wear it. I wanted to stop him but seeing how serious the general was, I kept quiet.
Finally they brought a uniform, the general put it on and took the brush from the hand of the painter and shouted," Are you a painter? He replied, "Yes". The general asked how long he had been serving. The reply was fifteen. Hearing this general grew angrier and said, "Shame on this service! What have you learned? You spent half a tin on such a short length. I could paint several times as much with this tin.
The general then sat there by the tin and asked for some kerosene. Next he diluted the paint and started painting together with the two soldiers.
But although he was very angry he mildly told them to start painting from the other side. He taught them the proper way of painting. Then, as a punishment he ordered them to put some stone in a knapsack and fasten in on to the back of the painter and make him pace the area.
While busy painting the fence he told us, "You go after your jobs. No one should stay here". We left the spot. After some time when we returned the general with the help of the two soldiers had painted more than 50 meters.
That day he painted till the night and the following day he continued the work till noon when the meeting of the council started. Then he wore his uniform and left for the lecture in the meeting. This left a great impression on the commanders. Then later whenever we went for inspections we noticed the newly gas-oil and painted fences.
