Iran’s Rasht City Granted Membership in Mayors for Peace Organization

Navideshahed- The Iranian northern city of Rasht was granted membership of the Mayors for Peace, an international organization of cities dedicated to the promotion of peace and the abolition of nuclear weapons all over the world.

The president of the Mayors for Peace, Kazumi Matsui, who is also the mayor of Japan’s Hiroshima, appointed the mayor of the Iranian city of Rasht as a new member of the global organization.
Mohammad Ebrahim Khalili, mayor of Rasht, expressed satisfaction with the membership in the Japan-based organization, and said, “The success to join the organization (Mayors for Peace) belongs to the pacific, peace-loving and peace-seeking citizens of the city of rain (Rasht).”?
Rasht is a Caspian Sea littoral city located in northern Iran, which enjoys mild climate and environmental attraction.
Khalili also hoped that he would be able to convey the peace message of Rasht citizens to the entire world after joining the Mayors for Peace organization.
127 Iranian cities were already members of the organization, which includes a total of 5,895 cities all over the globe.
The Mayors for Peace was established in 1982 at the initiative of then mayor of Hiroshima Takeshi Araki.
The organization, through close cooperation among the cities, strives to raise international public awareness regarding the need to abolish nuclear weapons and contributes to the realization of genuine and lasting world peace by working to eliminate starvation and poverty, assist refugees fleeing local conflict, support human rights, protect the environment, and solve the other problems that threaten peaceful coexistence within the human family, according to its official website (http://www.mayorsforpeace.org).
