Self-Purification in Ramadhan from Martyr Motahari

Ramadhan is basically the month of self-purification; it means during this month those persons who have stepped in the wrong path will be directed towards the accurate path and those who are in the accurate path will be more perfect.

The program of Ramadan month is purification of humans. These programs correct the errors and mistakes of humans and they include the programs of the control of intellect, belief and determination on the carnal lusts. They are the programs of prayers and worshipping God. They are the programs of flying towards God. They are the programs of promoting the spirit and they are the programs of polishing the spirit.

During the 30 days of Ramadan month, if the humans are supposed to eat nothing within the days and tolerate thirst and hunger, sleepless and for example they do not sleep during the nights until late time and they take part in different religious parties and eventually a feast to be held at the end and they have not been changed at all, then this fasting is not good for the humans.

Islam does not say that the humans only to open their mouths or to close their mouths. These actions are not effective in the outlook of Islam. In fact the humans are supposed to be corrected and reformed by fasting; because in our religious percepts it has been mentioned that some humans have no benefits from fasting but only they have to tolerate hunger and thirst only. In fact the humans do not eat foods even the lawful foods and drinks because they want to practice this action during 30 days. They want to practice that they must not backbite, lie, insult and does not eat unlawful thing.

Still it is something associated to the intellectual and spiritual aspects. A woman referred to the prophet of God (May God send greetings to him) while she had fasting. The prophet of God offered her some milk and something to eat and he said: Take it and eat. She said: “Hey prophet of God, I have fasting. He said: you don’t have fasting, take it and eat it. She said: No, I have fasting. Once again the prophet of God urged that she should eat what he had offered her. She said: I have fasting, I really have fasting; because she thought that she really had fasting; but her fasting was only a physical fasting like our fasts. The prophet of God said: How do you claim that you have fasting, while you have eaten the meat of your dead brother or sister about an hour ago (due to backbiting)? Do you want me to prove that you have eaten the meat? You should vomit them! She vomited, suddenly some meat got out of her mouth. If the humans go on fasting and they backbite, it means they have eaten the meat of dead brothers or sisters. If the human backbite during the fasting, it means they have closed their mouth for the lawful foods and they have opened their mouth for the unlawful foods.

Why according to the religious percepts it has been said that if a human says a lie, the stinking smell of this lie will be felt even in the seven skies? Why they say that the hell has so much infections and poisons, in fact the infections and poisons of the hell is due to what we do in this world and what we have created in this world. They are due to the lies that we express here. Expressing insults and abuses have the same level of sins.

Slandering is the most horrible sin; because slandering has the sin of lie and backbiting. Why the humans backbite, abuses and insults? The human who lies, lies, but he won’t say bad words against anyone. He/she will say a lie and that is all. But the humans who slander, they commit two sins simultaneously; it means they have committed two big sins at the same time.

Is this true that a Ramadan month to be finished and we have done many slandering for each other? Ramadan month is for the purpose that the Muslims to come together and they perform social worshipping and they gather in the mosques. In fact Ramadan month is not for the purpose of creating division between the Muslims.
