Defending Khoramshahr Meant Holding Basra for Iraqi Baathist Regime

Navideshahed: Only in our imagination Khorramshahr was in peace and no missiles or rockets would drop on its lands. Its groves had not heard the sound of tank wheels; eventually Khorramshahr became bloody in August 1980. After passing the dark days that were full of smokes and captivity, the city was librated on May 23, 1982. Khorramshahr was the city of burnt palms and palms without branches.

Mohammad Dehghan, the general manager of Hormozgan Foundation for Preservation of Holy Works and Values of Sacred Defense Era in an exclusive interview with ISNA in Persian Gulf area said: “In order to understand the importance of this victory we must know that the Iraqi forces in their announcements had said that defending Khorramshahr is the same as defending Basra, Baghdad and other cities of Iraq. Also the equipments and enemy defensive facilities indicate that Iraq would consider the capture of Khorramshahr as a symbol of victory and it aimed to keep the city by any costs.”?

“When the first and second phases of the military operation ‘Beitol Moghadas’ was ended and the Iranian war veterans stationed around the city, the Iraqi Baathist regime’s radio would attempt to show that the presence of Iraqi war veterans in Khorramshahr city is obvious in order to weaken the morale of Iranian war veterans and to repair the weakened morale of Iraqi forces. The conquest of Khorramshahr caused many of the Iraqi Baathist forces to be captured by Iranian forces," he said.

Dehghan notified: “The military operation ‘Beitol Moghadas’ was the most outstanding defensive operation that was launched by the Islamic Republic of Iran in the military chronology of eight year war of Sacred Defense Era. If today we visit the public graveyards of each city and village and to review the writings of the gravestones we will see some martyrs who have taken part in the military operation of Khorramshahr Liberation. The collection of the martyrs of May 23 are considered as a small model from the resisting nation of Iran which shines the same as a sky that is full of stars. The happiness of all round Iran after Khorramshahr liberation was another leaf of this national epic and it indicated that different classes of Iran, who had not seen Khorramshahr even once, got so happy and delighted when they heard the news. In fact the people of Iran got so happy and they celebrated pushing back the enemy from Iranian lands.”?

“May 23, is a national epic. If the nation of Iran did not exist in the scenes of the defense, neither the victory would be realized and nor the epic of people presence in the victory celebration would occur. So we can rightly say that honoring the conquest of Khorramshahr should be done by honoring the people presence in all the scenes,”? he said.
