Leader: poets are guardians of nations

At a meeting with several Persian-speaking poets, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Ali Khamenei asserted that poets are guardians of nations’ cultural identity.

According to Navideshahed correspondent, this meeting which was attended by the Iranian, Tajik, Indian, Afghan and Pakistani poets is held annually on the occasion of birth anniversary of Imam Hassan (AS), the second Shi'ite Imam, on July 13.
The event provides an opportunity for poets to share their insights with Ayatollah Khamenei-who is an avid reader/listener of poetry-and recite their works.
The leader is an expert of the Iranian classic poetry and is particularly interested in the works of Sa’eb (or Saib) Tabrizi (1671-1677), the prominent master of ghazal, a form of Persian lyric poetry similar to the Western sonnet, which is comprised of rhymed couplets.
From the view of Ayatollah Khamenei who has stated that “poetry is a national fortune”?, Sa’eb is a top Persian ghazal-sara (sonneteer), only after Hafez. Sa’eb has composed almost 200,000 couplets on ethical, theosophical, mystical themes with profound insight which is enlightening for the reader, furthermore, Sa’eb’s poems are also imbued with a deep religious wisdom
