Indian Muslims Succeed in Preventing Rushdie’s Visit

Following the news of Rushdie's cancelled trip to India, Islamic groups said they would not go ahead with their planned demonstration against the trip.

India’s Jamia Islamiya Group issued a statement hailing the efforts and cooperation of Muslims to prevent the trip.

It said India’s police “has assured us that Rushdie will not attend the Jaipur Literature Festival”?.

Author of the sacrilegious book “The Satanic Verses”? was due to appear at the festival on Friday but after protests from Muslim clerics, Islamic institutions and Quranic schools, he was forced to council the visit.

The Darul Uloom seminary, an influential body in India, was among the many institutions and bodies that had urged the government to bar Rushdie from the festival.

Rushdie’s blasphemous “The Satanic Verses”? was published in 1988. He has insulted Muslims sanctities and the Holy Prophet of Islam in this book, which is banned in India. Rushdie, who was born in Mumbai, is now living in Britain. He has spent most of his time in hiding after Imam Khomeini issued a fatwa in 1989 calling for his death over the sacrilegious book.
