Zoroastrian Contribution to Contemporary Awakening

Navideshahed: TV channels, newspaper headlines and different websites have been occupied by the news stories, reports and special coverage of the uprisings in the Middle East countries, US and Europe for nearly the past couple of years.

Although social injustice, economic recession and joblessness have been the major motivations, the nature of the moves has taken religious hue too.

Taqrib New Agency (TNA) in an exclusive interview with Mobad (Zoroastrian priest) Pedram Soroushpour Representative of the Zarathustrian in Tehran and member in the Society of Zaratustrian Mobads in Tehran tried to look at these contemporary moves with a focus on the role of religious leaders and particularly Zoroastrian view on the issue.

Defining the contemporary awakening around the world, this religious leader said awakening or vigilance is the principle of all divine religions drawing the example from Zarathustra, “The message we have received from our Prophet Zoroaster (Zarathustra) is that the major mission of religion is spreading awakening in society when our Prophet in a Gatha at the beginning of his mission addresses men and women calling them to hear the best message with their ear, to ponder that with their logic and then each one of them choose the best.”

According to Zarathustrian leaders, it means the first step is listening to the views, and then thinking about them then each person freely chooses his way.

Therefore a perfect society in view of Zoroaster is a society that each individual chooses his religion in absolute freedom. It may be a farfetched plan but at least people can move in line with that.

He called the moves popular movements as real and beautiful because people know themselves as awakened when a collective conscience is substituted by several individual consciences which stand at a higher possibility of making mistakes.

When asked on what the Zarathustrian society can contribute to the contemporary awakening he said,” In fact all religions have some common facts but different experiences which can be quite helpful at least to help us know our religions better. For instance what is the view of Zarathustrians in their uprisings to fight lies, that how can a religion which is based on morality and peace and tranquility fight? How can it fight lies without withdraw because the basis is resisting this fight against lies. These experiences and sharing each other’s knowledge can be quite helpful.”

On the practical solution, rather than dialogue for achieving the objectives of the moves, he said,” What holy Zarathustra did was firstly, naming God Almighty, to know God as our ever supporter, secondly, having hope because a correct move based on awakening is not a simple and short termed movement.”

Based on Mobad Pedram Soroushpour hope, resistance and using the right tools are the necessary means for success.

“It’s a move for which the result will appear in the long run; therefore we have to be hopeful.” he said and added, “Third is resistance and fourth is using the right tools for the movement, meaning that you are not supposed to fight against people but to fight what has harassed the people.”

He rejected compensation as the solution for the issues amongst people and said, “We never fight against lies with lies same way that we cannot fight against wrath with wrath or confront greed with greed, hatred with hatred or wish that killing of some people would lead to happiness of some others.”

This Zoroastrian priest stressed the role of education and said, ”This is the way when education and only education can be a solution for.”

but according to what our messenger has promised us we are quite hopeful that someday permanent peace will prevail in the world which is based on the vigilance of each person.

Expressing his view on the role of dialogue among religions he said, “Let’s respect dialogues and heighten our tolerance throughout these dialogues because dialogues never have a negative result but also listen to the different views even if they are in opposition with our understanding of our religion, let’s hear them, discuss them, think about them and then we also as a member of the people move and will never be behind.”
